Gatehouse & Sally Port Renovation transforms the primary point of arrival to the facility with a new mass timber gatehouse that balances security, professionalism, and staff well-being.
A new mass timber gatehouse replaces the existing enclosure, pairing the warmth and biophilic qualities of exposed wood with the durability and performance required for a correctional environment. The result is an arrival experience that communicates safety, professionalism, and respect—setting the tone for residents while providing officers with a more comfortable and calming workspace. The project also includes a new glulam roof structure over the sally port, delivered through phased construction that maintains uninterrupted facility operations.
The relocation and strategic placement of windows provide officers with nearly 360-degree visibility of the surrounding grounds, improving situational awareness while reducing blind spots. Ballistic glazing enhances staff protection without creating an overly punitive appearance.
By combining improved visibility, enhanced protection, and a calming interior environment, the design reduces cognitive burden and supports staff who work in an inherently high-stress setting.
