Ranger Station

The Park Manager’s Office and Residence was designed to support the long-term stewardship of a landscape defined by constant change. The project combines administrative functions and on-site housing into a compact facility that strengthens year-round park operations while responding thoughtfully to the challenges of a sensitive coastal setting.

The building is carefully integrated into its environment through a design approach that prioritizes durability, efficiency, and minimal site disturbance. Supported by helical piles, the structure lightly touches the landscape, reducing impacts to natural systems during construction while allowing the surrounding environment to continue evolving naturally. The compact organization maximizes functionality while minimizing the building footprint, creating a practical and efficient workplace and residence for park staff.

Resilience guided every aspect of the design. Durable materials, improved energy performance, and a flexible building strategy ensure the facility can withstand the demands of Maine’s coastal climate while reducing long-term operational costs. Equally important, the project acknowledges the temporary nature of development within dynamic coastal environments. The structure is designed to be removable at the end of its service life, allowing the site to be restored with minimal lasting impact and reinforcing the park’s mission of environmental stewardship for future generations.
